Congestive Heart Failure Management App

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a common condition in which the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood. It can result from myocardial infarction and other forms of heart disease. Its management requires a delicate balance of fluid input and output, and unfortanately the management is often insufficient, resulting in poor quality of life and frequent hospitalization.

This project will include the development of an app for CHF management that allows patients to track their weight (weight changes quickly with fluid load), blood oxygenation, medicaiton adherence, and activities of daily living. It will leverage the CollaboRhythm platform so that this data can be shared with family members and clinicians in real time. Patients will be able to collaboratively manage their fluid balance with a health coach in order to improve their symptoms and prevent hospitalization.

The specific goals of this project are:

  1. Integrate a weight scale into CollaboRhythm by writing native Java code for an Android service that manages the bluetooth connection with the weight scale and by writing a CollaboRhythm plugin that handles data from the service.
  2. Integrate a pulse oxymeter into CollaboRhythm in a similar fashion.
  3. Use the 4Home Home Automation System to track patient activities of daily living so that a metric of "functional activity" can be determined. Push this data to CollaboRhythm so that it can be correlated with weight and blood oxygenation.
  4. Create a visualization for patients that helps them to optimize fluid management in order to minimize shortness of breath and other symptoms associated with CHF.
